New delivery and learning method types

This issue is being raised by AMPP. They offer courses that are various combinations of online, in person, synchronous, asynchronous, self-paced, and instructor-led. They need to describe combinations such as:

• Online + synchronous + instructor-led
• Online + asynchronous + self-paced
• In-person + synchronous + instructor-led
• Blended + mixed synchronous/asynchronous

Some of these are not covered in existing schemes.

Based on discussion yesterday:

Draft Proposal

Use case: Add ability to classify synchronous / asynchronous delivery and instructor led learning.

Add New Concepts

Add two to the existing DeliveryType concept scheme

URI: deliveryType:Asynchronous

Label: Asynchronous
Definition: Delivery is such that participants are not expected to undertake activities simultaneously.
inScheme: ceterms:Delivery
topConceptOf: ceterms:Delivery

URI: deliveryType:Synchronous

Label: Synchronous
Definition: Delivery is such that participants are expected to undertake activities simultaneously.
inScheme: ceterms:Delivery
topConceptOf: ceterms:Delivery

Add one to the existing LearnMethod concept scheme

URI: learnMethod:InstructorLed

Label: Instructor-Led
Definition: Learning activities are facilitated by a subject matter expert.
Comment: The subject matter expert is expected to be a human and may be known as an instructor, teacher, trainer.

Note:

Combinations of existing and these concepts meet the requested classifications, e.g.

The only non-obvious one is the last one,

would suggest that a students are expected and not expected to work simultaneously. That's kind of OK is you have concede that they do so at difference times, but we might add

I expect that most course are mixed, in that they have classes and "home work" / lectures and assignments.

Thanks @jgoodell2 . Sorry, but I don't much like the CEDS definitions for synch/synch learning:

Asynchronous Student-oriented teaching and learning which is not organized around participants interacting at the same time and in the same space.
Synchronous Group-oriented teaching and learning organized around participants interacting at the same time and in the same space.

We decided to avoid reference to "same space" because it then leads to needing to explain that "online counts as a space" and so you can have synchronous online. Better, I think, just to avoid that.

Also, the Group- vs Student-oriented part seems to rule out small-group work in asynchronous delivery, important for the social constructivists among us who want to do provide flexible learning. I think it confuses asynchronous delivery with self-paced learning.

Makes sense. Maybe you could suggest in CEDS OSC that CEDS adopt the more generalizable definitions that leaves out "space". That would keep the standards in "sync". 😁 f.y.i.
