Summary

Additional environment API keys can use SDK APIs that require public access tokens. The SDK detects the additional-key format and asks the Trigger.dev server to mint scoped tokens instead of attempting to sign them locally.

Root environment keys retain their existing local-signing behavior. Trigger and batch clients also prefer server-issued tokens returned in response headers while preserving compatibility with older servers.

Deployment notes

This package update is safe to publish before servers expose additional key creation. Existing root keys continue to use the current path, while an additional key used with an older server fails with an actionable upgrade error.

Follow-ups

  • Publish the updated @trigger.dev/core and @trigger.dev/sdk packages before enabling additional key creation.
  • Record the first published SDK version for the dashboard warning and public documentation.

Walkthrough

Adds detection and public exports for additional API keys, a core API client method for server-issued public tokens, and root-key-only local signing. SDK authentication and AI token minting now route additional keys through the public-token endpoint while preserving root-key JWT flows. Batch and trigger token responses use server-provided headers when available. Tests cover key formats, request payloads, token scopes, expiration, one-time use, root-key behavior, missing endpoints, and chat session tokens.

371-379: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Extract the repeated jwt-header/claims fallback into a shared helper.

The x-trigger-jwtx-trigger-jwt-claims/generateJWT fallback logic is now duplicated four times in this class (triggerTask, batchTriggerV3, createBatch, and createWaitpointToken's prepareData), differing only in the scope prefix and default expiration. Extracting a private helper (e.g. #resolvePublicAccessToken(data, response, scopes, defaultExpirationTime)) would remove the duplication and reduce future drift risk between these near-identical blocks.

♻️ Proposed helper extraction
+  async `#resolvePublicAccessToken`<T extends { id: string }>(
+    data: T,
+    response: Response,
+ scopes: (id: string) => string[],
+    requestOptions?: TriggerRequestOptions
+  ): Promise<T & { publicAccessToken: string }> {
+    const jwtHeader = response.headers.get("x-trigger-jwt");
+    if (typeof jwtHeader === "string") {
+      return { ...data, publicAccessToken: jwtHeader };
+    }
+
+    const claimsHeader = response.headers.get("x-trigger-jwt-claims");
+    const claims = claimsHeader ? JSON.parse(claimsHeader) : undefined;
+
+    const jwt = await generateJWT({
+      secretKey: this.accessToken,
+      payload: { ...claims, scopes: scopes(data.id) },
+      expirationTime: requestOptions?.publicAccessToken?.expirationTime ?? "1h",
+    });
+
+    return { ...data, publicAccessToken: jwt };
+  }

Then each call site collapses to:

-      .then(async ({ data, response }) => {
-        const jwtHeader = response.headers.get("x-trigger-jwt");
-        ...
-      });
+      .then(({ data, response }) =>
+        this.#resolvePublicAccessToken(data, response, (id) => [`read:batch:${id}`], requestOptions)
+      );

203-236: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Consider consolidating the repeated additional-key/root-key branching.

createPublicToken, createTriggerPublicToken, and createBatchTriggerPublicToken each repeat the same shape: compute scopes → isAdditionalApiKey(...)createServerPublicToken(...), else generateJWTClaims()internal_generateJWT(...). A small shared helper taking { scopes, oneTimeUse?, expirationTime, realtime } plus a claims-payload builder would remove this triplication and keep the three mint paths in lockstep as scopes/expiration handling evolves.

Also applies to: 319-352, 402-435

Do not use high-cardinality attributes in OTEL metrics such as UUIDs/IDs (envId, userId, runId, projectId, organizationId), unbounded integers (itemCount, batchSize, retryCount), timestamps (createdAt, startTime), or free-form strings (errorMessage, taskName, queueName)
When exporting OTEL metrics via OTLP to Prometheus, be aware that the exporter automatically adds unit suffixes to metric names (e.g., 'my_duration_ms' becomes 'my_duration_ms_milliseconds', 'my_counter' becomes 'my_counter_total'). These clipboard writes are intentionally invoked without `await` and without `catch` handlers across the project; keep that behavior consistent when reviewing TypeScript/TSX files (e.g., usages like in `apps/webapp/app/components/code/TextEditor.tsx`).

Learning: In the triggerdotdev/trigger.dev codebase, webhook URLs are not expected to contain embedded credentials/secrets (e.g., fields like `ProjectAlertWebhookProperties` should only hold credential-free webhook endpoints). During code review, if you see logging or inclusion of raw webhook URLs in error messages, do not automatically treat it as a credential-leak/secrets-in-logs issue by default—first verify the URL does not contain embedded credentials (for example, no username/password in the URL, no obvious secret/token query params or fragments). If the URL is credential-free per this project’s conventions, allow the logging.

Learning: When handling Prisma error P1001 ("Can't reach database server") in TypeScript, don’t assume a single error shape. Prisma can surface P1001 via two different error classes/fields: `PrismaClientKnownRequestError` exposes it as `err.code === "P1001"` (common during mid-query connection drops), while `PrismaClientInitializationError` exposes it as `err.errorCode === "P1001"` (common on client startup failure). Therefore, predicates should use `err.code === "P1001" || err.errorCode === "P1001"`. Do not flag `err.code === "P1001"` as “unreachable/never matches,” as it is expected in production.

Learning: When handling Prisma errors for P1001 ("Can't reach database server"), do not assume it only appears under a single property name. Prisma may surface P1001 via either `PrismaClientKnownRequestError` (`err.code === "P1001"`, e.g., mid-query connection drops) or `PrismaClientInitializationError` (`err.errorCode === "P1001"`, e.g., client startup connection failure). To reliably detect the condition, check `err.code === "P1001" || err.errorCode === "P1001"`, and avoid review rules that would incorrectly flag `err.code === "P1001"` as unreachable/never-matching.

Learning: In triggerdotdev/trigger.dev, within `dashboardLoader`/`dashboardAction` (or similar context resolver code) whenever you resolve an organization ID from an organization slug for RBAC/enterprise authorization scope, always read from the primary Prisma client (`prisma`), not `$replica`. Using `$replica` can hit replica-lag and cause the RBAC lookup/authorization to run without the correct org scope (bypassing intended role enforcement). Implement the slug→org lookup with `prisma.organization.findFirst(...)` (or equivalent primary-client query) and add an inline comment documenting why the primary client is required (replica lag could lead to unscoped RBAC checks).

Learning: In TypeScript, it’s valid to `import { type X }` and then use `typeof X` in a type-only position, e.g. `type Alias = z.infer<typeof X>`. The `type` modifier suppresses the runtime import, but the type checker still has the full exported type so `z.infer<typeof X>` can resolve correctly. In code reviews, don’t flag this as a TypeScript compile error as long as `typeof X` is used in a type context (e.g., with `z.infer`, `type` aliases, generics), not as a runtime value.

Learning: In this repo’s trigger.dev codebase, the “never mock — use testcontainers” guideline should only be applied to integration tests that talk to real external services (e.g., Redis, Postgres, S2). For unit tests that validate in-memory logic (e.g., deduplication/cache behavior in StandardRealtimeStreamsManager and similar module-boundary call counting), it is allowed to use Vitest mocks like `vi.fn()` and to stub/mock `ApiClient` objects to count calls or simulate in-process collaborators. Do not flag `vi.fn()`-based mocks as policy violations in these unit-test scenarios; reserve the rule for true external-service integration tests.

Learning: In the triggerdotdev/trigger.dev repo, the policy “Never mock anything — use testcontainers instead” should only be enforced for integration tests that interact with real external services (e.g., Redis, Postgres) via actual infrastructure. For unit tests that exercise pure in-memory logic (e.g., cache semantics) it is OK to stub collaborators such as `ApiClient` using Vitest (`vi.fn()`) to assert call counts or control behavior. If an interface is being used as a behavioral contract for collaborators to implement (e.g., method-shape interfaces that define required behavior, such as `BackpressureLogger` / `BackpressureSignalSource` in `apps/supervisor/src/backpressure/backpressureMonitor.ts`), keep it as an `interface` and do not flag it as a type-alias-vs-interface violation.

Learning: In this codebase, outbound raw `fetch` calls should typically rely on Node/undici’s default request timeout (about ~300s) rather than adding a per-call `AbortController` + `setTimeout` wrapper inside individual functions (e.g. in files like `apps/webapp/app/models/vercelIntegration.server.ts`). During code review, do not flag the absence of a per-call timeout on a single `fetch` as an issue; if per-call timeouts are needed, they should be implemented via a codebase-wide convention (e.g., a shared fetch wrapper or documented pattern) rather than ad-hoc per-function changes.

Specifically: for each turn-complete control record written to `session.out`, include a `session-in-event-id` header whose value is the committed-consume cursor (`session.in.lastDispatchedSeqNum`). On boot/resume, scan `session.out` for the latest turn-complete record, read the `session-in-event-id` header, and seed the `sessionStreams` manager for `.in` using both `lastSeqNum` and `lastDispatchedSeqNum` so previously processed user messages are not replayed. In SDK tests, `vi.spyOn(console, "warn")` (or similar console spies) should only be used to suppress stray console output; reviewers should not suggest asserting on `console.warn` spies to verify SDK-internal warning/fallback log behavior. A number passed to `expirationTime` is a Unix timestamp in seconds, not
milliseconds as the JSDoc claimed. Following the old docs produced a token
that effectively never expired.

Also fail loudly when an additional API key reaches a local self-signing
fallback. Those keys are not the environment's JWT signing material, so the
token would never verify. Every endpoint that returns a public access token
sets `x-trigger-jwt`, so this is unreachable today.

155-164: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject invalid Date values before serializing expiration.

new Date("invalid").getTime() returns NaN, and NaN serializes as null in the HTTP JSON body. The server can then apply default expiration logic instead of using the caller’s intended expired timestamp.

Suggested fix
 function serverExpirationTime(
   expirationTime: number | Date | string | undefined
 ): number | string | undefined {
-  return expirationTime instanceof Date
-    ? Math.floor(expirationTime.getTime() / 1000)
-    : expirationTime;
+  if (expirationTime instanceof Date) {
+    const milliseconds = expirationTime.getTime();
+    if (!Number.isFinite(milliseconds)) {
+      throw new Error("expirationTime must be a valid Date");
+    }
+    return Math.floor(milliseconds / 1000);
+  }

339-359: 🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use the client-provided token lifetime for server-issued JWTs.

The current server contract always signs these x-trigger-jwt tokens with "1h", but the client fallback accepts requestOptions.publicAccessToken.expirationTime. Return the requested token with a matching exp, or keep the fallback as the authoritative path before exposing the requested expiry in the public surface.

Learning: When reviewing code that uses `trigger.dev/react-hooks`’s `useRealtimeRun`, preserve the call signature where the first argument is the full realtime handle object (not `handle.id`). This is intentional to maintain type-safety and is consistent with the official docs; do not suggest changing the first argument from the handle object to `handle.id`.

Learning: When reviewing TypeScript in this repo, apply the rule “prefer type aliases over interfaces” only to data/object shapes and union/intersection type modeling.

Timestamp: 2026-06-09T17:58:04.699Z

Learning: When reviewing code in `packages/trigger-sdk/src/v3`, treat `tasks.triggerAndWait()` and `tasks.batchTriggerAndWait()` as real exported APIs. They are defined in `shared.ts` and re-exported via the `tasks` object in `tasks.ts`, and they take the task ID string as their first argument (not a task instance). This is distinct from the instance methods `yourTask.triggerAndWait()` and `yourTask.batchTriggerAndWait()`. Do not flag calls to `tasks.triggerAndWait()` or `tasks.batchTriggerAndWait()` as non-existent or incorrectly invoked.

Learning: In the Trigger v3 session resume/streams logic, ensure session resumption uses sequence cursors rather than timestamps. Do not use `setMinTimestamp`/`lastOutTimestamp` for resume ordering in this flow.

Learning: In the Trigger SDK (v3) when making raw `fetch` calls to the Trigger API (including override paths such as `createChatStartSessionAction`), set the request headers to match `ApiClient`: `Content-Type`, `Authorization`, and `x-trigger-source: "sdk"`. Also forward the current preview branch by setting `x-trigger-branch` to `apiClientManager.branchName`. Prefer using the shared `overrideRequestHeaders(accessToken)` helper instead of manually constructing headers, so requests route correctly to preview environments.

Learning: In `packages/trigger-sdk` (Trigger.dev SDK), `logger.warn` (and other SDK logger methods) should route to the Trigger.dev structured logger sink, not to `console.warn`. In SDK tests, `vi.spyOn(console, "warn")` (or similar console spies) should only be used to suppress stray console output; reviewers should not suggest asserting on `console.warn` spies to verify SDK-internal warning/fallback log behavior. Use the SDK’s structured-logger outputs/capture approach instead of console spies.

## Summary
2 new features, 9 improvements, 3 bug fixes.

## Highlights

- Allow additional environment API keys to create scoped public access
tokens through the Trigger.dev API. Use server-issued public access
tokens for batch operations so environment-scoped API keys can read
batch results.
([#4387](#4387))

## Improvements
- Preserve the partial assistant message when a chat turn's model stream
fails mid-response. `chat.agent` now passes the recovered partial to
`onTurnComplete`, and `chat.createSession`'s `turn.complete()` keeps it
before rethrowing, instead of dropping the streamed-so-far output.
([#4348](#4348))

## Server changes

These changes affect the self-hosted Docker image and Trigger.dev Cloud:

- Favorite any dashboard page to a new Favorites section in the side
menu, and customize the sidebar by renaming favorites, hiding items, and
reordering items and sections.
([#4375](#4375))
- List API endpoints now clamp the page size to a maximum of 100.
Requests asking for a larger page size return up to 100 items and keep
paginating, rather than pulling an unbounded page.
([#4360](#4360))
- Organizations without billing alerts now get default spend alert
thresholds, so you're notified before usage grows unexpectedly. The
billing limit page no longer pre-selects an option before you've set a
limit and prompts you to configure one. Alert previews now update
immediately after you change your billing limit.
([#4328](#4328))
- When you create a Personal Access Token, the generated token now shows
its first and last few characters instead of being fully hidden, so you
can confirm you copied the right value.
([#4363](#4363))
- Add metrics to the realtime backend that measure how often a single
changed run is served to multiple subscriptions in one batch.
([#4341](#4341))
- Realtime run subscriptions can now be configured to read run data
straight from the primary database, so a run's latest state is never
served from a lagging replica. Off by default; replica reads are
unchanged unless you turn it on.
([#4378](#4378))
- SSO and Directory Sync are no longer restricted to Enterprise plans —
get in touch and we can turn them on for your organization whatever plan
you're on.
([#4393](#4393))
- Improved supervisor observability: it now reports metrics for its
outbound requests, making failed calls to upstream services easier to
monitor.
([#4350](#4350))
- The runs list on a task's page now updates live — run statuses change
and newly triggered runs appear without a manual refresh, matching the
main Runs page.
([#4377](#4377))
- Speed up the Batches list page for environments with a large number of
batches, which could previously time out while loading.
([#4361](#4361))
- Container startup no longer prints database and ClickHouse connection
strings (with credentials) to the logs.
([#4346](#4346))
- The tasks page no longer runs two queries whose results were never
displayed, cutting wasted work on every page load and removing a source
of hidden server errors
([#4380](#4380))
